A New World - Call For Artists
Are we entering a new phase in the history of art, and of the world as a whole?
I feel a cold chill down my spine. I don’t know exactly what it is, but it doesn’t leave me. It’s been here for a while. As I begin to understand new truths, the overall picture seems like an abyss. What could it be?
Could it be the same chill the modernists felt when photography was invented? Or when society moved from candles to electric light?
No, I don’t think so. This feels different.
We are living through an unprecedented proliferation of images, art and artistic production but what will remain? What will define art, and the artist, in this new world?
Who gets to imagine the new world? Who gets to build it? And who gets left outside it?
These are complex questions, questions that resist easy answers and cannot be approached from a single point of view.
It is therefore a great honour to welcome the legendary art critic and historian Anthony Fawcett, whose remarkable career has intersected with some of the most significant artists, ideas and movements in contemporary art. His perspective brings not only a deep knowledge of art history, but a lifetime of witnessing how art responds to, and sometimes anticipates, a changing world.
Anthony Fawcett began his career at Vogue at the age of eighteen and has since made a lasting impact on the art world. He brought Man Ray to London in 1969, collaborated with John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Andy Warhol and Charles Saatchi, and created the Beck’s Art Sponsorship Programme.
Fawcett has worked with iconic artists including Francis Bacon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst, among many others. He founded Anthony Fawcett Consultants, served on the Whitechapel Art Gallery Development Board and launched the Vertu Global Art Commission. He is currently working on the Anthony Fawcett Archive with Tate.
Anthony Fawcett will be present at the exhibition on 9 October, where he will give a speech exploring the themes and questions at the heart of A New World.
This exhibition explores the fragile space between what is disappearing and what is yet to come. Through different artistic perspectives, A New World reflects on a world in transformation, questioning the systems we inherit, the realities we construct and the futures we choose to imagine.
